Join me on a playful journey through the creative process behind original artwork, exploring the intricate twists and turns that lead to magical masterpieces. Buckle up, because this is where the magic happens!
Inspiration Strikes: The Spark of Creativity
The creative process begins with a simple spark of inspiration. Just like how a dazzling star lights up the night sky, an artist’s idea can ignite from anywhere! With me, it happens when I see a breathtaking view. It makes me paint! With others, it can be a sweet dream, or a not-so-sweet dream, or a wisp of whimsy from everyday life.
Inspiration is all around us.
Finding Your Muse
Every artist has their muse. For some, it might be the luscious colours of a garden, while others might find beauty in the serene flight of birds against a vibrant sunset. There’s something so enchanting about capturing the essence of nature and translating it onto the canvas. That’s where, for example, a captivating sunset artwork often begins—in the rich hues of dusk that inspire a bold and vivid creation.
When I put all of it in one box, this box would be called NATURE.
So, NATURE IS MY MUSE!
Sketching Out Ideas: The Brainstorming Stage
Once the muse has taken over you, the next step is to grab that sketchbook and start doodling! This is where the brainstorming magic takes place. Think of this stage as a playful playground for thoughts and ideas.
Rough Sketches and Loose Lines
Creating rough sketches allows artists to let their imagination run wild. Lines flow like a dance, and as shapes form, the vision becomes clearer. During this phase, it’s not uncommon to find about 100 versions of the same idea. Just like a pigeon strutting about, artists often flit from one idea to the next, keeping things fresh and lively! I do it sometimes, but not always. Check this artwork out. I exactly knew where I wanted to go and how I would create it. I began as often with the sky!

The next step: still working on the sky.
Choosing Colour Palettes
Now, let’s talk about colour! Artists must decide which hues will best express their vision. Opting for vivid oranges, soft pinks, and deep blues can create that delightful contrast we often see in a Purple Sky Sunset painting. This is where the real fun begins! Any artist knows that colour invokes emotion, so choosing the right palette is like finding and mixing the right colours you see around you.
Here is my colour palette (see below), which I used to create Sunset Landscape Close to Bellingham. Please forgive the quality of the photograph, which is slightly out of focus. I haven't photographed my palette again, so this is the only image I have. I am sometimes not the greatest photographer, and mostly don't think about photographing my work in progress. So sorry for that!

Brushing and Blending: Bringing Ideas to Life
With the colours chosen, it’s time to grab my big brushes and dive more into the world of paint! This is where the magic truly unfolds. Watching a blank canvas transform into a lively piece of art is like witnessing a caterpillar metamorphose into a butterfly! Here we go! What do you think about the metamorphosis?

The First Strokes
The first stroke can be both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Maybe. But I work differently. There is nothing exhilarating by first strokes!
Yes, it might be a part of the journey, but I don't need to take a deep breath before painting.
Each stroke adds character to the artwork by layering for depth or delicately blending colours for smooth transitions. Imagine creating a piece of bird art by accentuating the feathers with gentle touches of colour—this is where detail dazzles!
Layering Techniques
One of the secrets to great artwork lies in layering. The simple act of adding layers upon layers brings depth and richness to a painting. Just like adding sprinkles to an ice cream scoop, layers make everything sweeter! By strategically applying additional colours or textures, artists can create dynamic pieces that draw the viewer's eye and keep them engaged. The Finishing Touches: The Details Matter
No artwork is complete without those finishing touches. This stage is akin to putting on the final accessory that ties an outfit together. Every detail counts!
Highlights and Shadows
By adding highlights and shadows, the painting comes to life. This is when a Sunset Landscape Close to Bellingham captures the glow of the sun below the horizon, with vibrant colours playing off one another, creating an interactive experience for the viewer. The way light dances on the edges of trees and bushes in the artwork is a sight to behold—it almost completes the piece!

Signing the Masterpiece
Once all the strokes are in place, the moment every artist eagerly anticipates arrives: signing the masterpiece! This signature isn't just a cool three-letter moniker; it’s a mark of pride, proof of hard work, and an invitation for others to admire the creation. Signing also allows the artist to leave a piece of their soul on the canvas, and, of course, it helps future collectors identify their work!
The Art of Sharing: Showcasing Original Artwork
Creating artwork is only one part of the journey. Sharing it with the world is a whole new adventure! Whether through exhibitions, online galleries, or social media platforms, showcasing art is crucial to connecting with an audience that appreciates creativity.

Building an Online Presence
In today’s digital age, having an online presence for an artist can be vital. Platforms like social media provide artists with the unique opportunity to connect directly with fans, support the artistic community, and even make a few sales along the way! Engaging posts, behind-the-scenes snapshots, and interactive live sessions can keep followers excited while spotlighting stunning pieces.
Art Shows and Exhibitions
Don't forget about traditional art shows! Participating in local events or virtual exhibitions allows artists to showcase their works, network with other creatives, and, at times, even inspire budding artists to jump into the wonderful world of creation themselves! Plus, there’s nothing quite like the electrifying buzz of an art opening where art enthusiasts wander around admiring the craft—it's pure joy!
I have to mention that I am not good at showcasing or marketing my artwork at all. However, once I participated in an online show at FusionsArt in the USA and received a mention for Sunset Landscape Close to Bellingham as Artistic Excellence (among other artists) - see the screenshot of their webpage below.

Embracing Feedback: The Evolution of Artistry
One key aspect of being an artist is embracing feedback. It can be scary to hear opinions about your work, but constructive criticism helps an artist grow and evolve. Being open to critique can lead to better artistic techniques and new perspectives, leading to even more compelling pieces in the future.
Learning and Adapting
Every piece of feedback is a stepping stone towards improvement. An artist can analyse what resonates with their audience, adjusting their style and techniques along the way. A comment about how those vibrant hues capture the essence of a painting can inspire new creations and styles that encapsulate more sophisticated ideas about the world. Learning can be fun, just like finding new shapes in the clouds!
Art as a Journey: The Creative Rollercoaster
The process of creating original artwork is a rollercoaster of emotions, challenges, and triumphs. From the initial spark of inspiration to the moment a piece is proudly showcased, every step is precious. Each piece of art tells a story, and every artist’s journey is unique—just like the vibrant palette they choose to create with.
Celebrating Each Creation
Each artwork deserves to be celebrated, whether it’s a sentimental piece or a playful adjustment to a previous idea. An artist can look back on their journey and smile, knowing they've created something imaginative and heartfelt. Creating artwork isn’t just about the product; it’s about self-expression, exploration, and the joy of sharing parts of one’s soul with the world.
